Embarassing habits

We still haven't been able to break Buzz of his fondness for #2. I thought it would go away after winter, since he seemed to be very particular of frozen #2. But no.... now, he will turn around as he is #2ing and will eat it! If we aren't right there the moment he starts, there's no getting him to stop.

And it's not like he isn't getting enough food (although I'm pretty sure he thinks we are starving him to death). He's on a food that is typically used for weight management in dogs; however, we are giving him almost twice the recommended amount for a dog his size as he still needs to beef up from losing all that weight back in December. He eats 1 cup first thing in the morning, another cup when he goes in his crate (around 8:30AM or so) and then another cup at night. Trust me, this boy is not starving!

Does anyone have any ideas on how to break him of this habit? Other than holding the #2 bag directly under his butt (which I don't think he would appreciate very much), I can't think of anything to get him to stop!

  1. There are pills (that I haven't tried) that you can feed your dog that is supposed to make the poop not taste good. Many, many different brands.

You may also want to try meat tenderizer. I do know someone who had luck with that one.

  2. Well, you could try a treat, something that would be more enticing than his poop! When he's going #2, show him the treat. While he's "going" maybe he will focus on that and when he's done walk away with the treat and see if he follows.

    Good luck!

  3. Royalcoonhounds, I've heard the meat tenderizer thing before, but I don't trust that especially with a diabetic. I've tried ForBid from the vet (ever heard of it?), but that's only temporary. He's right back at it after 5 days of the ForBid.

Kirby's mom, that's a really good idea. I think I'll try that on our walk today.

  4. Listen, I don't care what people say, there's nothing in this world that will make a dog say, "Hrm, that tastes terrible!", especially when they are already eating their own poop!
