Sorry I've been MIA - I'm really busy with grad school stuff... but it's Saturday and I made myself take the day off!
I have a confession to make - I do not clean Buzz and Bella's teeth daily. Or even weekly. I am a horrible pet mom.
However, Bella has a vet appointment Wednesday to get dental work done. She has to go under anesthesia for it and it's really starting to freak me out. I know that there is a type of dental cleaning that doesn't require anesthesia, but I've heard mixed reviews (see here). Personally, I think it's worth it to spend a little more money and get something done that's tried and true. My vet is offering 20% off this month (for National Pet Dental Health Month, of course!), so that's a perk. However, the thought of Bell going under anesthesia (this will be her 3rd time!) is pretty upsetting. I've done a lot of research and know that she needs to get this done, but that doesn't help with the anxiety.
Buzz was supposed to be included in this visit, but our internal specialist told us that Buzz can't go under anesthesia while his diabetes is out of control. Buzz already has the beginning of periodontal disease - see here - and needs this done BADLY, but his general health is more important right now. I don't see him crying a river over this, though he might have fun bothering Bella in her post-anesthesia hang over. :)
Have you had your dogs teeth cleaned? Did it go smooth or were there problems? Feel free to share your story and help alleviate my anxiety (okay.. so if you have a horror story, tell me on Thursday!).
I've had my Bella's teeth cleaned twice. The most recent time was this past fall - I had a talk with my vet about how stressed I was last time (she was pretty out of it, but okay) and he used a different anesthesia protocol this time - apparently there are different options, some harsher than others. This time, it wore off much more quickly. The vet also called me with lots of updates - if you're anxious, definitely ask for more info from your vet. It helped me to get some more info. :)
